Delegation: Delegate Routine Tasks and Free Up Your Time For Creativity

Delegation is a skill and also requires a Mindset Shift

D is for Delegation

It's time for the next A-Z of hiring a VA.  Delegation when it comes to the routine tasks or the tasks you dislike doing can require a Mindset Shift as whilst yes you CAN continue doing them, long term you don't HAVE to and as a creative person you will find that once you start to delegate

The first step is to acknowledge that you want to delegate!

Once you have decided to delegate it I would recommend writing out a list of all the things you do either daily, weekly or monthly and then rate them out of 10.  10 being the tasks you love and 1 being the tasks you procrastinate over

Once you have your list, count up all those tasks which are below 5 and these are your tasks to be delegating!

Now the fun begins as you get to search for the person who will become your best friend!

This can either be several people per task.  For instance and Accounts, Web, Socials, Cleaning or it can be 1 person such as a Virtual Assistant

A Virtual Assistant can often be low cost and affordable particularly for authors who don't have massive spending budgets but know they need some assistant

The time you're saving by having someone else do the tasks you're disliking it frees you up to be more creative and focus on doing the thing you love, writing!

Once you have found the person you want to work with, I would suggest starting small.  Don't throw everything at them at once as like I said at the beginning it requires a mindset shift to delegate work to someone.  Start small and then as you get more comfortable with someone else working with you and you're happy with their work, then you can gradually add more things to their last which will help to free your time up.

The important thing to know is that with delegating is that you still have the control and if there is something that as you build your author business comes up that actually wasn't on your original list and you want to give it to your VA then you can have that discussion.  It may be something that they're not skilled at such as maybe editing videos for reels/tiktoks but there are plenty of people that share how to do it and so I am sure that your VA would be happy to learn as it helps you but it also broadens their skill set.

I see delegation very much as a collaborative process, you get support for your business and the VA gets to learn from you.  For instance, one of my clients provides me with a whole month of content for the social scheduling.  I am learning other ways to craft a post to get the same message across and so by working with them I am developing my writing skills, which may surprise you aren't necessariliy my strongest skill.

So to recap

1 - spot the signs you need help
2 - write a list of all your tasks
3 - rank them out of 10
4 - tasks below 5 are the ones to delegate
5 - research people who can help
6 - choose one and start small
