Preparing Your Child for an EEG with Buzz the Tactile Penguin...

Does your child have sensory processing differences and feel sensitive to touch?

I know an EEG can be a challenging experience as both my children have had a number of them with all the wires and glue involved so I wanted to share some tips as it's #NationalEpilepsyWeek and see how Buzz The Super Sensory Squad penguin that links to touch to help make the process smoother:

  1. Explain the Process: Use simple, child-friendly language to explain what an EEG is and why it’s important. A great book we recommend is The Abilities In Me Foundation Epilepsy book
  2. Practice at Home: Introduce the sensation of touch gradually. Use playdough or a soft brush on their scalp to mimic the feeling of the wires and glue.
  3. Create a Comfort Kit: Bring along a favourite stuffed animal, blanket, or fidget toy. Our cuddly penguin Chill can also be your child’s buddy, offering reassurance and a familiar touch (you can grab him here
  4. Deep Pressure Techniques: Use weighted blankets or tight hugs before and after the procedure to provide calming deep pressure input.

Also discuss any sensory concerns with the EEG technician beforehand so that they are aware and can make adaptations or give you a bigger time slot.
