What's your why? What inspires you? Why your own business?
My why begins with my frustration of been unable to buy a soap I could trust with my then teenage daughters skin. I just wanted her to be able to bathe herself without upsetting her skin, I didn't want her to be itchy and sore anymore. We had fixed her eczema when she was a baby, but it returned when she was 12. I was annoyed at so many companies claiming their products would help my daughter, that they weren't as natural as they claimed. They still had suspect ingredients and their words manipulated people into thinking they were great products
So more than 10 years probably closer to 15 now I started my journey in crafting soaps for my daughter. I researched and experimented. I had failures but a lot of success. We discovered scents and colours were a big no-no, they irritated her skin. So I never put them in my soaps. I tried clays and decided they weren't really doing a lot to help. Honey and beeswax help, as does shea butter. Goats milk and coconut milk are also great, as it turmeric.
For years myself and my daughters used the soaps, and then I started giving it away to friend and family. My husband and kids kept on telling me I needed to sell my soaps that they were great, but I thought they weren't good enough, not pretty or the smells people wanted. Then I gave some one of my daughters work colleagues to try on their little boys skin. And it worked, his eczema was better, even better than it was when his parents used steroid creams. This was amazing to me, it made me so happy to know, it wasn't just my family saying my soaps were great. Then I learned from others that they would like to try my soaps too and they would pay for them. I learned they didn't have to be pretty and smell pretty, that were good just the way they were.
In August last year I finally launched my soap business, it brings me so much joy that my soaps are now helping others with their skin. Like all small business things are up and down, but I'm happy with the achievements I have made so far and aim to achieve so much more this year.
So my advice to you is if you are sitting on a plan or a product, give it a go, launch your business, what's the worst than can happen. With any luck joy and success and pride in what you are doing
