“The Mother Deep” - a poem by Doreen Valiente

I thought I'd share something a little different with you all today.  Doreen Valiente is the true mother of Wicca, working closely with Gerald Gardner not only as his High Priestess but also by transcribing a lot of Gardner's notes into a workable book of shadows.  She was a prolific poet, and even those of us who are not Wiccan can see her influence far and wide throughout modern Neo-paganism.  Here is one of her poems that really resonated with me, so let me know if it speaks to you too.

The Mother Deep by Doreen Valiente

Behold within the glittering sea

The moon-led tides of mystery.

Its water swirls upon the sand

Uncannily like outstretched hand,

Grasping its hunger to assuage,

With sentience of timeless age.

Strange forms within its purple deep

Move like some phantasm of sleep,

While countless creatures spin and spire,

Glowing with phosphorescent fire.

Upon one far forgotten morn,

Out of its waters life was born,

And while the aeons slowly passed,

Across the land life was spread at last,

The monstrous and the beautiful,

The shell, the lichen and the skull.

Yet deep within all memory

There echoes the ancestral sea.

I really like this poem, and if you haven't checked out any of Doreen's poems yet then I highly recommend her book "The Charge Of The Goddess - The Poetry of Doreen Valiente".
