5 Reasons why you need community in your life
New Year, new you!! We hear this all the time especially now in January. That it's time to eat better, cleaner. That we should exercise more and stop drinking alcohol etc etc.
But the benefits of being part of a community are not spoken about.
Human beings recieve many social benefits from interacting with other human beings.
It has been shown in many studies since the 1970s that having a sense of community belonging is a major influencer of overall well-being.
Indeed Maslow,1943 states belonging needs as the third step in h8s hierarchy of needs.
During Lockdown many suffered not only from the mental health effects of loneliness but also the physical effects of health. Research has shown that feeling alone and isolated increases the risk of heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure as well as a weakened immune system, anxiety, depression, a decrease in cognitive function and even death.
However by becoming part of a community has these 5 benefits listed below
People who are feel part of a community live longer
There is mounting evidence that those who feel part of a community live longer.
They feel part of something, that they have a purpose, a reason to live.
They also have a decreased risk of developing health conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, anxiety and depression and have an better immune system than those suffering from loneliness or isolation.
Being part of a community boosts your mood
Being part of a community boosts your mood. Feeling included helps to release a neurotransmitter called dopamine that is known as the feel good transmitter. Dopamine contributes to feelings of alertness, focus, motivation and happiness.
Finding your community gives you hope
When you feel unheard, or unwanted there can sometimes feel there is nothing for you, that your life has no point and you can feel very alone.
When you find your community you fing people who want you to be with them, you feel part of something and you feel included.
You start to feel valued and a valuable member of your community and it gives you hope for your future.
You feel supported
As part of a group you have access to people you wouldn't normally have known. It enables the sharing of knowledge and information that perhaps your family or friends may not have access to.
It's good for your health
Feeling connected as part of a community is good for your health.
Social connection can reduce the occurance of heart attack, stroke, dementia, depression, obesity and anxiety.
It increases your immune system and your ability to deal from stress and to recovery from anxiety and depression.
It can help with improving sleep patterns and your quality of sleep.
