How do you choose the genre you write in? - Emma
I don't think there was a concious decision for me to write romance books, I kind of fell into it - or so I thought.
Looking back at the stories I wrote as a teenager (both for myself and for friends), there was always a romantic element to them. And I found it quite easy. Then I found fanfiction, and again, gravitated to more romantic elements within my stories.
Now, writing romance is easy to a point. But writing good romance isn't. Yes, the romance genre as a whole is quite predictable in how a story unfolds and evolves, but making it either believable to a great form of escapism requires skill (not trying to sound bigheaded here, I promise).
Readers of romance are, on the whole, accepting and willing to try anything. However, they can be brutally honest if something doesn't quite sit right with them. And rightfully so. As authors, we write books to be read, and we're never going to please everyone. So as long as your story is solid and you love it first, readers will too - just not all of them.
Which genre would you love to write in? - Clare
I have been an avid fan of dystopia for years. Ever since I read The Handmaid's Tale at relatively young age. I devour YA dystopia such as The Divergent Series and The Hunger Games, and would absolutley love to write something in this genre.
However, I am a panster when it comes to writing. I usually have a rough idea where the story is heading, but very little in the way of planning. I feel a dystopian book/series would take endless hours of planning and plotting and that puts me off.
Maybe one day though.
