Age is just a number

A reminder that you're never too old to learn something new.

I'm a piano and drumkit teacher. I've chatted with so many people that say "oh I learnt to play as a child, but stopped when I was in my teens" or "I never got the chance to have lessons, but I always wanted to!".

Over the years I've been teaching, I have taught a number of adults. One of my favourite teaching experiences was teaching a lady who was well into her 70s. Let's call her Anne.

Anne's husband surprised her with the gift of drumkit lessons - I know, you were expecting it to be piano! She'd wanted to play since she was a child, but had never had the chance.

When Anne started lessons, she found it incredibly challenging physically as well as mentally. Anne struggled reaching the pedals of the kit as she had problems with her mobility. She also found it difficult to remember details and we used a lot of repetition to try to help.

After we'd had several months of lessons, Anne came into a lesson positively beaming. She'd had an appointment to assess the progression of her dementia, and her test results had improved since the last set (pre drumkit lessons). She was convinced her lessons were responsible!

Don't let your age stop you doing anything. Who knows, it might be a dementia preventor like drumkit lessons were for Anne!
