This being graduation season, there have been several notable speakers at the various graduation ceremonies.
Joe Biden's Speech at Morehouse College
Our president, Joe Biden, spoke at Morehouse College in Atlanta. Unfortunately, his speech spread racial division. He indulged in his personal history as a civil rights crusader, somehow single-handedly changing the Delaware democratic party in an act of self-aggrandizement. The intent to stir resentment among the graduates did not instill hope.
Controversial Remarks
Mr. Biden is quoted as saying:
- “You started college just as George Floyd was murdered and there was a reckoning on race. It’s natural to wonder if democracy you hear about actually works for you.”
- “What is democracy if black men are being killed in the street?”
- “What is democracy if a trail of broken promises still leaves black communities behind?”
- “What is a democracy if you have to be 10 times better than anyone else to get a fair shot?”
- “And most of all, what does it mean, as we have heard before, to be a black man who loves his country even if it doesn’t love him back in equal measure?”
It's an interesting vision to have students work four years to graduate, come together to celebrate with family and friends, and have the President of the United States offer thoughts that your countrymen who are white want you to fail. Apparently, that’s Joe’s message.
Comments on Voting Rights
He then delved into Republicans not wanting blacks to vote. He is noted to say, “Today in Georgia, they won’t allow water to be available to you while you wait in line to vote in an election. What the hell is that all about? I’m serious. Think about it. And then the constant attacks on black election voters who count your vote.”
Just a reminder, Joe, the 2022 Senate race in the deep south state of Georgia featured two black men as the major party nominees. The leftist democrat won after election reform Mr. Biden caricatures as racist.
Remarks on January 6
He next launched into the January 6 event as a racist event. Joe says that “insurrectionists who stormed the capital with confederate flags are called patriots by some. Not at my house. Black police officers, black veterans protecting the capital were called another word, as you’ll recall." Unfortunately for Joe, that day was not about racial hatred.
Economic and Global Issues
This is the presidential candidate in 2020 who promised Americans that he was going to unite the country. He is beginning to realize that his economic policies have failed to deliver the gains he promised. As the inflation that he ignited has overcome real wages, there’s been a decline in the perception of his presidency. The world is currently a mess with two wars and possibly a third, and he seems to have no clue what to do about it. Unfortunately, despite his failures, he seems to take race as his most likely approach to success in re-election.
Jerry Seinfeld's Speech at Duke University
Meanwhile, over at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, the 2024 commencement speaker was Jerry Seinfeld. Seinfeld is the most financially successful comedian of all time, in addition to the fact that his co-stars, producers, etc., have largely enjoyed significant success, much of which probably comes as a result of the Seinfeld program. Seinfeld also adheres to a no-swearing type of comedy, which generally is a better type of comedy, in my opinion.
Encouraging Humor
The speech, which was largely overshadowed by the media reporting Hamas terrorist-supporting students walking out in protest of Seinfeld, who is Jewish. Jerry Seinfeld encouraged people to use humor to get by in their everyday life. He states, “I think it is also wonderful that you care so much about not hurting other people's feelings in the million and one ways we all do that.” He encourages students not to live a life without humor. He noted that not enough of life makes sense to survive without some sense of humor. He reminded us that even as Generation Z improves the world, it will still be a pretty insane mess. It’s incredible to me that Seinfeld is seventy years old, having been a fan of his show. It’s too bad that the Gen Z Hamas terror-supporting protesters didn’t hang around long enough to listen to what he had to say. The war in Gaza is clearly no laughing matter, but Gen Z’s program response at times is sad and laughable.
I, for one, would prefer to be at the Duke commencement.
