Avid reader or just starting? The Ultimate Guide to Enjoying Books

Ever Found yourself lost in a sea of books, not knowing where to start? You are not alone.

I am excited to introduce 'Bizy Bookworms Reading Journal', a guide designed to help adults navigate their reading journey, whether they are seasoned readers that have lost their reading motivation or just starting out.

I have always loved to read, and was a proper bookworm from a very young age. My mother dispaired as she could not keep up with the pace I devoured books. Mum ended up enroling me in the local library (who's childrens section I exhausted), then a larger not so local library (same) and eventually Birmingham Central Library which lets face it, is pretty big! At Secondary school the Librarian spotted this addiction and fueled it with a new genre of books, including World War 2 Fiction, Fantasy and the classics. I then gained a Saturday job in a local secondhand and antiquarian bookshop and then migrated to a rather large bookshop in the centre of Birmingham. That was heaven and my addiction to reading continued. Fast forward several years and career changes, marriage, divorce, children, 2nd marriage and responsibilites; I realised I had stopped reading. The last book I remembered reading was in 2019, and was called 'Elizabeth is Missing', not a good look for a Bookseller.

Earlier this year I decided I would look at creating time for myself so I could tackle the "to be read" and "I've started but haven't finished" piles of books cluttering my bedroom floor. Then I was ill, laid up with pneumonia symtoms for two weeks. In that time I devoured the books I had started but not finished and hit on my to be read pile. I then put my foot down and told my family I needed me time just to sit quietly with a book each day and read a bit.

I had always wanted to write a book. Fueled by the realisation that I could not possibly be the only adult who had been overwelmed by life and choice of books out there, wanting to read with no idea where to start. This inspired me to create a tool that makes the reading process enjoyable and organised.

The journal begins with a series of probing questions about books you have enjoyed from your childhood. It then progresses to books you read at school, then questions about your favouite things. The next section gives you suggestions about where to look for reading inspiration. There is a place to create yourself a booklist, and journal pages to log the books you have read, including favourite bits, quotes and a score out of 10. You can even log further reading inspiration based on the book you have just finished. As you move through the journal you will find interactive elements such as quotations and challenges to inspire your reading journey.

Don't forget to answer the questions at the start of the journal, and complete the first book list as instructed to help you move forward with your journey. Always log the books you have read, even if you cannot finish them. Write down why you liked or disliked a book and chat with your friends to see what they have enjoyed reading.
