Returning to full-time work after over a decade of raising children is a significant transition. As someone who excelled in their career before taking a break, the prospect of re-entering the office environment can be both exciting and daunting. This is my journey of navigating this change

The Anticipation and Anxiety
The night before my first day, I felt a whirlwind of emotions. Nervousness and anxiety took center stage, overshadowing the excitement of starting a new chapter. I kept questioning myself: "Can I still do this job?" Despite my past success, self-doubt crept in, and I wondered if my skills were now outdated or if I could keep up with the pace of modern office life.

First Day Jitters
Walking into the office felt surreal. The environment had changed, but the hustle and bustle remained the same. As I looked around, I couldn't help but notice the impeccably dressed colleagues. Insecurity gnawed at me—did they see my extra weight, my less-than-designer clothes? These thoughts swirled in my mind, making me feel out of place.

The initial introductions were a blur, and the nerves got the best of me. Feeling my stomach churn, I rushed to the restroom, needing a moment to compose myself. It was a tough start, but I reminded myself that everyone has first-day jitters.

Finding Common Ground
Returning to the office, I was met with friendly faces and genuine interest. Colleagues asked about my children and how I managed childcare during the school holidays. This simple act of kindness started to melt my anxiety. I found common ground with some of the women, bonding over shared experiences of parenthood.

Conversations flowed more naturally as the day progressed. Talking about our kids and the challenges of balancing work and family life, I began to see similarities between us. These connections helped ease my nerves, and slowly, I started to feel like I belonged.

A Newfound Confidence
By the end of the day, the office felt less like an intimidating place and more like a community I could be a part of. The support and camaraderie I found among my colleagues were unexpected but incredibly reassuring. It reminded me that I wasn’t alone in this journey; many of us were navigating similar paths.

As I left the office, a sense of accomplishment washed over me. I survived my first day, and more importantly, I began to rediscover the confidence that had been buried under years of self-doubt. Tomorrow is another day, and with each step, I remind myself: "I've got this. I can do this."

Embracing the Journey
Returning to work after a long hiatus is challenging, but it’s also an opportunity for growth and self-discovery. It's natural to feel nervous and out of place initially, but with time, those feelings can transform into confidence and a sense of belonging. Embracing the journey, acknowledging the fears, and celebrating the small victories can make the transition smoother.

To anyone else on a similar path, remember: It's okay to feel anxious and insecure. These feelings are part of the process. But with each day, you'll find your footing, build connections, and regain your confidence. And before you know it, you’ll be thriving in your new role, just as you did before.
