The Magic of Sobriety and Spirituality

If you are reading this on Tuesday 11th June 2024, I will be celebrating reaching 18 months sober and I can honestly say it is the best decision I have ever made..

Going sober is the best thing I ever did and let me tell you why. Becoming sober has enabled me to tap more into my spiritual gifts. It is said that alcohol numbs the senses and dulls the 3rd eye and I truly believe it.

My “awakening” I guess if you want to call it that, happened when I was pregnant and obviously, I wasn’t drinking during that time. I say obviously, but some people really struggle to stop. Especially if they have a bad addiction, but for me knowing I had a little life inside of me was enough reason to stop immediately. Anyway, I received lots of spirit messages and guidance during pregnancy, even Xaviers name and sex was given to me by spirit. Once he was born, I started having the odd drink here and there and all that connection stopped.

I didn’t think anything of it at the time, but it wasn’t until I began this current journey, that it all made sense.  I had started drinking a lot more, particularly when Xavier was with his dad at weekends. Within weeks of me quitting the spiritual connection was made again and then after becoming attuned to Rose Reiki when I was 5 months into my sober journey, everything went up a notch. I was receiving full blown downloads, being sent messages from other peoples departed loved ones and so much more. I don't believe that would have been possible if I would have been still drinking.

Now I am not saying if you can’t drink if you are a spiritual person, psychic etc, but I would imagine that your gifts and practices would be much deeper if you didn’t. People ask me if I will ever drink again, and the answer is a big fat NO!! And it isn’t just because of the spiritual reasons. Health plays a big part too.

Did you know alcohol is a depressant? It can disrupt the balance of neurotransmitters (chemical messengers) in your brain and affect your feelings, thoughts and behaviour. I don't believe this is talked about enough, but there is a strong association between regular heavy drinking and self harm, suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts, and death from suicide.

I can vouch for this as when I was at my lowest and when I had planned to end things, alcohol was most definitely a contributor. This is because alcohol can make you lose your inhibitions and act more impulsively!!

Alcohol also affects the central nervous system, which can induce feelings that mirror anxiety and panic attacks. In the long-term, alcohol uses up and reduces the number of neurotransmitters in our brains, but we need a certain level to ward off anxiety and depression. This can make you want to drink more to relieve these difficult feelings – which can start a cycle of dependence.

So many people out there are self-medicating and unbeknownst to them, they are actually making things worse.

And don’t even get me started on the cancer risks. Did you know that alcohol is a carcinogen, meaning it promotes cancer? I honestly didn’t know that until I had quit. I did some research, and the facts are quite shocking, but important to know.

Compared to women who don't drink at all, women who have three alcoholic drinks per week have a 15% higher risk of breast cancer. Experts estimate that the risk of breast cancer goes up another 10% for each additional drink women regularly have each day. Did you know that? They are some pretty shocking stats if you ask me.

There is also clear evidence that regular excessive drinking can increase your risk of developing the most common forms of dementia, such as Alzheimer’s Disease and vascular dementia. Why is this not talked about more?

I know, I know, it feels all doom and gloom, but I think it is important to know. I won’t overwhelm you though so I will just share one more thing. Drinking too much alcohol can cause hypertension, also known as high blood pressure. Hypertension contributes to over 50% of cases of stroke in the UK.

I can honestly say that if I would have had all this information before I had ever started drinking, I would have never of started.  It is clear to see why if you dont drink you would feel more healthier, as you arent putting chemicals in your body and will be generally feeling better all around, never mind on a spiritual level.

If you are struggling with addiction or even just concerned about your consumption levels, please reach out to someone. You don’t have to face it alone and it is easier when you have support around.  Feel free to connect with me on facebook – www.facebook.com/ColetteMalcolm82 and I will be happy to help in anyway I can.
