My Networking Journey: Real Growth and Genuine Connections
Hi everyone! My name is Aisling and I'm excited to share my story about how networking has changed my life. It all started in a group for mums that had nothing to do with networking. It was a space I liked to hang out and share ideas and ask for tips from other mums. Here's how I got into networking and what it's taught me.
Early Days and Initial Challenges:
When I first started networking, it was quite scary. I remember the old days in the corporate world when networking felt forced and awkward. But my first online networking session was different. I was nervous—sweaty hands, racing heart—but the MIB International leaders and community were so welcoming, it didn't take long for me to feel comfortable.
Big Changes:
A big moment for me was when I became more involved and offered to be the Spotlight Sponsor for an event. I was asked to post regularly about the prize I was offering but it felt a bit weird to me so I started asking questions related to the event coming up and getting people chatting and sharing the prize that way and helping to promote my visibility and the event visibility. Several of the UK leaders encouraged me to become a leader in IReland and to start the first group here and now I am the head MIB Networking Leader for Ireland and Northern Ireland looking after the whole country! This role helped me grow and let me help others too. I got to organise events, meet new people, and learn so much along the way.
How to Network Effectively:
What really works for me in networking is being authentic—sharing my true self, not just talking shop. My tip for anyone new to this is simple: just show up. Be yourself, listen well, and really get involved. It's about the people you meet and the community you build together. Remember that everyone is human first and we all intrinsically want to connect with people who make us feel good, seen and heard. Be that person!
The Role of Digital:
Online platforms have been a game-changer for me. Facebook has been great for building a community, LinkedIn is good for professional stuff, and Instagram is for inspiration. But for making strong, lasting connections, Facebook is my go-to. It’s a good platform for building community and connection more than the other 2.
A Story of Success:
One of the best things that happened because of networking was getting invited to speak in front of 250 business owners. This wouldn't have happened without the strong relationships I built in my networking groups or me commenting on a business owners post about her wanting to grow her network here.
What I've Learned:
Networking has taught me that everyone has a story. Every chat is a chance to grow and learn. Being kind, open, and empathetic has not only helped my business but made me a better person too.
Looking Ahead:
I'm really excited about planning fun events all over Ireland Northern Ireland right now. These gatherings are all about bringing people together to share, learn, and have a good time. I'm starting with a Business Boost Tour in June (Belfast!) and August- possibly in Cork or Galway. And of course, our big fundraiser and networking event on the Ireland and Northern Ireland border on the 12th of October with workshops and speakers and loads of fun with 200 attendees!
