Staying Cool When Tech Acts Up: A Print Industry Survival Guide

As the owner of a design and print business, I know firsthand the frustration that comes when technology decides to take a holiday. Whether it's a printer refusing to print or software crashing at the worst possible moment, tech issues can feel like a major roadblock. But don’t fret—keeping cool (easier said than done) is the key to navigating these bumps in the road.

Here’s my survival guide for getting through every print shops worst nightmare and not ending up needing to purchase a new printer/laptop/pc/insert tech item here, because you launched yours out of a window...

1. Take a Deep Breath

It might sound simple, but the first step is to take a deep breath. When the printer jams or the design software crashes, it's easy to let stress take over. A moment of calm helps to clear your mind and set the stage for problem-solving.

 2. Check the Basics

Often, the simplest solutions are the ones we overlook. Is the printer connected to the right network? Are all cables securely plugged in? Is there enough paper and ink? Before diving into more complex troubleshooting, make sure all the basics are covered.

3. Restart and Reboot

Yep, I see you rolling your eyes at me... but sometimes, all your tech needs is a fresh start. Restarting your printer or computer can resolve many issues. It’s a quick and often effective fix that can save you from a lot of headaches. Don't forget to try unplugging and plugging back in too, not just switching it off and back on.

4. Stay Updated/check for updates

Keeping your software and firmware up to date is crucial. Updates often include bug fixes and improvements that can prevent many common issues. Make it a habit to regularly check for updates and install them promptly.

5. Utilise Online Resources

The internet is a treasure trove of information. From forums to manufacturer websites, there’s a wealth of knowledge out there. Chances are, someone else has experienced the same issue and found a solution. Don’t be afraid to search for answers online. This is a good time to let Google be your friend!!

 6. Have a Backup Plan

Murphy’s Law states that anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. Having a backup plan can save you when tech fails. Keep a spare printer cartridge, backup your files regularly, and have alternative methods for design and print ready to go.

7. Know When to Call in the Experts

There’s no shame in calling for help. Sometimes, issues are beyond a quick fix. Establish a relationship with tech support or a local technician who can assist when problems arise. Knowing when to seek expert help can save you time and reduce stress. In my case I tend to head next door and get my other half to come and look at things with fresh eyes. Hes not quite the level of a text expert but when it comes to MY tech dramas he's normally a bit more level headed than me.

8. Learn from Each Experience

Every tech hiccup is a learning opportunity. Keep a log of issues and their resolutions. Over time, this can become a valuable resource that helps you troubleshoot future problems more efficiently.

 9. Stay Positive

Maintaining a positive mindset can make a world of difference. Tech troubles are frustrating, but they are also a part of the journey. Staying positive helps you remain resilient and ready to tackle any challenge. If you find you're struggling and the tech headache is getting too much, it's time to step away and do something to regain that positive mindset.

10. Take Breaks

When all else fails, sometimes the best thing to do is step away. Taking a break can help you return to the problem with a fresh perspective and renewed energy. Get some food. Have a drink. Get some fresh air. Do something that takes your mind off the drama for a while before going back fresh headed ready for round 2, or 3....

In the print industry, tech troubles are inevitable. However, with a calm mind, a proactive approach, and a dash of patience, you can overcome any technical challenge that comes your way.

Remember, every problem has a solution, and every tech hiccup is just a temporary obstacle on the path to success. Stay cool, stay calm, and keep printing!

And if all else fails outsource your design and print to someone like me..... So you don't have the headache of all the possible tech dramas that might crop up.
