The Essential Elements

“This week’s post is all about perfection! What exactly is ‘perfect’… and how to attain it!”

“Don't Wait For The Perfect Moment. Take The Moment And Make It Perfect!”

A couple of weeks ago, I was writing in my journal when I noticed the day and date didn’t match up… and I had to go back a few days to see where I’d gone wrong!
It turns out this all started on a Sunday, when I woke up convinced it was Monday and went to bed thinking it was Saturday! (A VERY confusing day indeed!)

Anyway, this all resulted in lots of crossings-out and corrections, then… instead of writing ‘May’ I wrote Monday: ‘Tuesday 28th of Monday’!?!?

I looked down at my journal and scolded myself, “Well that’s a mess isn’t it!” But then I quickly corrected myself, “But so what? Maybe, it’s exactly as it should be!

My journal is not an exhibit to be displayed at The National Gallery!
No one is ever going to read it!?!
It’s a genuine, honest and true picture of my thoughts (yes, this is what the inside of my mind looks like – a messy rotation of confusion, crossing-out and trying again)!

It is not meant to be ‘perfect’…!

And it got me thinking…

What is ‘perfect’ anyway?

I use the term a lot:

  • “I want this to be perfect…”

  • “I hope it’s perfect.…”

  • “That would be perfect…”

My interpretation of ‘perfect’ has become this spiralling illusion of an unreachable ideal… the set of a Hollywood fairytale.

And I remember it happening… I’d be in a situation where everything was great, and slowly thoughts would creep in suggesting, well if we had ‘this’ then it would be ‘perfect’… until eventually, I’d have to achieve world peace before anything could be classed as ‘perfect’!?

The Definition

“Having All The Essential Elements”

This is the fundamental definition of ‘perfect’!

And the word ‘essential’ really stands out to me!

It’s not about this unrealistic, mythical ideal

‘Perfect’ is basically when we have everything we need… not want, but NEED!

And in a world of escalating and reachable ‘wants’ and cleverly marketed ‘must-haves’, this has really changed my whole perception of ‘perfect’.

It’s opened my awareness to gratitude and appreciation! Because right down to the bare bones of it – we don’t actually need that much for things to be ‘perfect’!

What’s your ‘perfect’?

Surely everyone’s idea of ‘perfect’ is different?

‘Perfect’ is subjective… it rests in the eye of the beholder…

‘Perfect’ is not one true entity!

‘Perfect’ to me is accepting everything as it should be (oh my goodness, am I finally relinquishing my unjustified sense of control…?!?!).

‘Perfect’ to me comes from an inner sentiment… a ‘felt sense’ rather than external elements.

Like those times when I’m with Steve and the boys… we’re ‘together’ and fully present,  having fun… we’re happy and calm (yes, me!).
The sound of laughter envelopes us in a bubble where the rest of the world continues in a different time zone. There are smiles on all our faces, none of us have a care in the world, except for this moment together…

It doesn’t matter what’s going on in the rest of our lives, what jobs are on our mounting to-do list, or what worries we have to contend with… It doesn’t matter where we are… It doesn’t matter if it’s raining…

What matters is the feeling in that moment…

That is ‘perfect’!

The perfect wedding

I recently saw a spectacularly beautiful video of a couple on their wedding day – a gorgeous outdoor ceremony, in the breathtaking landscape of the Georgia mountains… you imagine blue skies and bright sunshine right?… Well I’m sure the bride and groom did too, but Mother Nature had other ideas… it absolutely threw it down! Rain ‘spit-fired’ that ceremony with all it’s worth!

But the couple (with help from a creative videographer) turned it into a magical scene from a romcom… it was absolutely stunning!! In such a way that it has the rest of us idolising a rainy-day wedding!?

This was their choice! Yes, they could have let the weather ruin their day… but instead they embraced it and turned it into something so magnificent that you wouldn’t have wanted sunshine!

You see, ‘perfect’ on their wedding was them being together, they were the ‘essential elements’… and well maybe the vicar… and a couple of witnesses… oh and the rings… OK maybe a few more things, but fundamentally just the two of them, together, on that day!

Remember:
We may not have control of everything that happens, but we can choose how we view it…

  • We get to choose the perspective of our own lives!

  • It’s within our power!

  • This is something we CAN control!
