Plastic, oh plastic! It's convenient, it's versatile, but boy, does it come with a hefty environmental price tag. Let's talk about why reducing our consumption of single-use plastics is crucial, backed by some eye-opening statistics.
Did you know that a staggering 40% of all plastic waste generated worldwide each year is attributed to single-use plastics? Yes, you heard that right. Those drink bottles, straws, grocery bags, and food packaging that we use once and toss away add up to a significant environmental burden.
The impact of single-use plastic waste on our oceans and the ecosystem is alarming. These plastics take ages to break down, leaving behind a trail of pollution that harms marine life, the environment, and even human health. Imagine fragile marine creatures entangled in discarded plastic or mistakenly ingesting it, causing severe injuries and, sadly, even death. As plastics break down into smaller fragments, they infiltrate our waterways, eventually entering the human food chain through seafood consumption.
But fret not! There's hope, and it lies in reducing our reliance on single-use plastics. One of the most effective ways to combat plastic waste pollution is to find alternatives that allow us to reuse or recycle existing materials. Think glass bottles instead of disposable ones and eco-friendly options like jute bags. By making these small switches, we significantly reduce our plastic footprint.
But it doesn't stop there. Businesses play a vital role too. They can actively reduce the use of single-use plastics in their operations, opting for sustainable alternatives. And governments can step in with policies that incentivize and promote such responsible behaviour.
In fact, Arbonne, whom I partner with has already replaced all but our cleansers with glass packaging, and the plastic that is used for the cleansers (for safety in the shower) is non-virgin plastics or recycled plastics. We also run a programme called 'ArbonneCycle' in partnership with TerraCycle worldwide where they repurpose hard-to-recycle packaging into new furniture for outdoor use and other items. The TrueSmooth haircare range is all in aluminium bottles now too and there are lots more changes that have been made. I'll add some screenshots of statistics from the Annual Report for 2022.
