From Expectation to Reality: My Cross-Cultural Matrescence Experience

Here is my vulnerable share from where it all began.

From childhood, I always envisioned myself as a mother, the epitome of love and nurturing. However, growing up in an environment where I felt pressured to excel and defy gender biases, I found myself embracing more of my masculine energy, fearing that showing my feminine side would be perceived as weakness.

The transformation into motherhood, however, taught me invaluable lessons. It encouraged me to slow down, nurture myself, and reconnect with my inner feminine strength. The birth of my first son was a profound turning point. My expectations of motherhood and my role as a mother were challenged, often in confronting ways. I frequently experienced intense emotional surges, as if facing my own inner demons. This was a period of significant emotional turmoil for me.

During this time, I discovered the term 'Matrescence' in Amy Taylor Kabbaz's book, a concept likening the transition into motherhood to Adolescence. Understanding this helped me realize why my emotions were so heightened – it was a natural response to the significant hormonal changes affecting my entire being.

Simultaneously, this period marked the beginning of my spiritual journey. Post becoming a mother, I immersed myself in studying spiritual texts from the Vedic Upanishads to the Bhagavad Gita and the Charaka Samhita. These ancient teachings offered me a newfound perspective and a deeper understanding of life and motherhood.

This journey led me to become a meditation teacher, where I learned the art of finding peace and balance within myself. This spiritual awakening was a key factor in helping me navigate the emotional and physical changes of motherhood.

Realizing the complexities of Matrescence, especially as a multicultural mother living away from my homeland, I recognized the need for a community that understands these unique challenges. Thus, I created a space for global mothers - a community not just for any motherhood, but specifically for multicultural motherhood.
