Empower Yourself: Understanding Toxins in Your Skincare and Cosmetics
Hey Love Lifers!! I'm Aisling Louise Owens Nash, your guide in this Lower Tox Living journey. Today, let's empower ourselves by understanding toxins commonly found in skincare and cosmetics, this can be overwhelming so we’re going to just keep it very simple today. I remember when I first began digging into this topic it was intense and quite scary to think not only what I was putting into my own body without realising but also into my children’s bodies!
Deciphering Product Labels:
So let’s delve into the art of deciphering labels on skincare and cosmetic products! I’m joking there is a much easier way these days to quickly and efficiently check your products giving you the knowledge to make informed decisions about what you apply to your skin. Learning to recognise some key ingredients in labels is a crucial step towards a healthier skincare routine but utilising apps such as the ones I will highlight below speeds it up and takes the headache out of it for us everyday folks.
Some things to think about!
- Common Toxins in Skincare and Cosmetics such as parabens, phthalates, and synthetic fragrances are found in skincare and cosmetics. Learn why avoiding these is crucial for your skin's health in my Introduction to Skincare call here.
- You no longer have to master the art of reading labels specifically on beauty products by yourself anymore there are many resources to support you with this. You can also access independent resources to learn and identify hidden ingredients and understand their potential impact on your skin and overall well-being.
- Explore natural and toxin-free alternatives for skincare and cosmetics. Discover brands and products that prioritize your skin's health without compromising on beauty.
Take note of toxins like:
- Parabens: Used as preservatives, linked to hormone disruption.
- Phthalates: Found in fragrances, associated with reproductive issues.
- Synthetic Fragrances: Often contain harmful chemicals not listed on labels.
A Global Perspective
Did you know? The EU and other countries have banned or limited more than 1,600 chemicals from personal care products. However, regulators at the Food and Drug Administration in the USA prohibit just nine for safety reasons. A few US states have stepped up to protect public health. California and Maryland have banned 24 chemicals from cosmetics. (source ewg.org 2022)
Your Action for Today:
Choose one skincare or cosmetic product, go to the independent SKIN DEEP ingredient checker or use the app found here to scan the label, and identify any potentially harmful ingredients. Consider swapping it out for a healthier beauty alternative. I do have a full shop of skincare, cosmetics, body care and nutrition that excludes over 2,000 ingredients.
You can access our Not Allowed List ™ here if you want to see the types of ingredients to avoid.
