Writing opens us up to be as imaginitive as we can possibly be. Think about the magical world of Hogwarts, the darkness of Stephen King's IT, or the sparkly vampire-ness of Twilight. Those things aren't real, and yet millions of people worldwide have read and loved those books. 

Here's the thing. You can set your book on another planet, in heaven or hell, or just about anywhere you want and you can make it successful IF you keep it real. 

"How can you make aliens real, Kyra?!" 

With EMOTION. 

Emotion is the driving force in every book. With horror, it's fear. With romance, it's excitement. With thrillers, it's anticipation. 

The most important thing when you write is having both characters and emotions that people can relate to. If you are writing about a demon falling in love with a princess (as mad as that sounds!), you can make it work simply by making the reader feel their emotions. Experience the changes within them as the story progresses, just as everyone progresses through life changes in the real world. 


There is not a single story you can't sell as long as the depth of the characters' feelings comes with a dose of reality.
