BookTok is a very popular part of the TikTok app and a fantastic way to reach new readers. Here are some tips on how to make TikTok work for you as an author.

The power of using TikTok has increased massively since 2020. It's gone from the thing everyone was using to have a giggle during lockdown about the changes we were all facing to a fantastic marketing tool for businesses of all kinds. However "BookTok" is its own special side of the popular app, and many authors have harnessed it to sell books and gain a bigger following. Here are some ways to effectively use TikTok as an author.

Engage with Trends

TikTok trends can offer a fantastic way to connect with a broader audience. Whether it's using a popular sound or participating in a challenge, adding trends into your content can boost visibility and attract new followers.

Create Book Trailers

When seeking out content to use to make your trailers, do ensure you use free sites such as Pexels to find videos that suit your story. You can get better quality and more variety on other sites, but you will have to pay a handsome fee for them. Don't just use things you find as you could be at risk of breaching someone's copyright. When you have found the perfect video for you, free sites like Canva can help you transform them into the perfect showcase for your book.

Use Hashtags Wisely

Research and use relevant hashtags to increase the discoverability of your TikToks. Consider creating a hashtag just for your books or writing journey to encourage engagement from your readers.

Showcase Reading Snippets

Reading excerpts from your book or sharing favorite passages will give potential readers a glimpse into your writing style. Use TikTok's effect (sparingly!) to give the video some visual pizzazz!

Be Consistent

Regular posting is key to staying visible on TikTok. I tried a piece of advice that said posting six times a day was the best way to gain a following. Instead, I got shadow banned! So, three a day max, but one a day will give your visibility a boost.

Interact with Your Audience

Respond to comments and engage with your audience. Building a community on TikTok is about creating a dialogue. The more friendly and interested you are, the more likely people are to follow and support you.

TikTok offers authors a different platform to share their stories, connect with readers, and showcase their unique voices. By incorporating these tips into your TikTok strategy, you can unlock the full potential of this rapidly growing social media platform for your writing journey.
