Progress and Impact on our Rainwater Harvesting Tank Projects in Kenya

Comments · 1274 Views

Since the end of 2022, our rainwater harvesting tank projects in Kenya have made significant step in improving water access for schools in the Rift Valley region. Through the installation of rainwater harvesting tanks in 14 schools—12 primary schools and 2 secondary schools in Bomet County and Kericho County—we are changing lives and improving educational outcomes.

The Need for Rainwater Harvesting

Kenya's Rift Valley region, like many parts of the country, faces substantial challenges in water accessibility. Seasonal rainfall and unreliable water sources often force students to spend valuable time collecting water instead of focusing on their studies. This scarcity of clean water also leads to health issues, impacting both attendance and academic performance. Our rainwater harvesting projects aim to address these challenges by providing a sustainable and reliable source of water for schools.

Our Progress So Far

Since the project's started at the end of 2022, we have successfully installed rainwater harvesting tanks in 14 schools across Bomet and Kericho counties. These 10,000 litre tanks captures and store rainwater from rooftops, ensuring that schools have a consistent water supply even during dry periods.

Schools Supported with Rainwater Harvesting Tanks:

Impact of Our Projects

Kipranye Primary School

A  school like Kipranye Primary School in Bomet County faced significant challenges due to water shortages, especially during the dry season. The installation of a rainwater harvesting tank will ensure a steady supply of water throughout the year. The school can now have access to clean rain water and children can have less fear of treaking through dangerous terrains to get water.

Message from Joyce Rotich, Headteacher of Kipranye Primary School

SCHOOL REPORT ON THE URGENCY OF A WATER TANK

I write to draw to your attention on the urgency of having a water tank for the School. The school faces water challenge forcing learners to fetch water from river Nyangores which is a distance from the school. The river also poses danger to learners for it is risky at its water banks, stiff slopes and a times slippery during rainy season. Last year we experienced danger where a learner almost drowned after sliding from a slippery end lucky enough there were parents nearby who were able to swim and save the learner. That experience has made the learners fear fetching water from the same river. With the tank from your organization, the school will solve water challenges for the learners in that it will save them time which can be maximized in learning thus improving their academic performance. It will also enable learners access to clean drinking water reducing the risk of waterborne diseases. It will also benefit the community for they will also fetch from school reducing the stress of walking long distance for clean safe drinking water. Thanks for coming to our rescue.

Yours faithfully,
Joyce Chelangat
