After years of gradually becoming disheartened as a Speech Therapist in a large
corporation, when my daughter turned 3 in December 2018 I was finally ready to get creative
and start the journey towards full-time self-employment. I had big ideas, a big vision, a
mission and a purpose! I was a Mum in Business!

I started by writing my first book. It was a challenge but I had people rooting for me to do it
and I really enjoyed the process. That was the start. Just before I self-published a friend told
me I should join the online Mums in Business community. I had no idea what it was but I
joined anyway! I liked the community feel in the big group and got stuck in. At the same time
I began looking at other ways to grow my work into a business rather than just another job
working for myself. I learned about different aspects of business, I started writing my second
book - I’d got the bug! - and I also looked at the idea of creating some sort of school, hosting
seminars and events, and training up others to carry out the therapy (I forgot to say, I’m
qualified as a children’s speech therapist). When March 2020 came around and lots of things
started to change quite quickly, I realised that my local MIB community, where I’d managed
to attend 2 face to face events, was going to be my place to go whenever I needed support,
inspiration and friendship from others who ‘got it’! I also had to try to resist the temptation to
‘go online’ in an instant like many others, and I persevered, sticking with my original vision.

Now I am an Empowering Speech Consultant. I’m an author, public speaker and CEO. I’m at
the point where I have 3 books ‘out there’, I’ve converted 2 into ebooks and now audio. I’ve
worked with social media, primarily Twitter, now with Facebook, Linkedin and a tiny bit of
Instagram, to market my book. I’ve built a community to bring my clients together and offer
value. I’ve grown a team of 20 in my main business, plus I have started a second business!
My work is reaching families all around the world. At every step of this incredible journey to
making my dreams come true, networking with the right people has been at the core. Never
underestimate the power of connection with the right people. MIB is my networking space
forever.
There’s a long way yet to go, but I’m really pleased I started the journey, and I can’t wait to
see how things pan out in the next few years!
