Finding Calm Through Grounding: Rediscovering Connection with Nature and Self

I explore the transformative benefits of grounding and how it can help reduce anxiety, stabilize your nervous system, and reconnect you with the present moment.

Stopping the Busyness of Mind and Body

Grounding stops the busyness—the busyness of both the mind and body. It makes you stop and reconnect with yourself, bringing you back to the present moment. Nature plays a big role in grounding, as you connect with the Earth’s electromagnetic energy. Science has proven that within minutes, grounding naturally calms the nervous system, reduces heart rate and blood flow, and brings both heart and breathing to a natural rhythm. It stabilises the nervous system and calms the mind and body.

Connecting with Nature’s Energy

I’ve often lain on the grass and watched the clouds go by, letting go of life’s stresses—one of those being my own thoughts—and getting lost in the beauty of the present moment. Another practice I’ve found very grounding is visualisation and breath awareness. I often practise a grounding visualisation where I sit in a comfortable position, my feet placed firmly on the ground, while visualising roots growing from the soles of my feet and digging deep into Mother Earth. I’ll share this practice at the end of this blog.

My Journey with Grounding

Visualisation has become part of my daily ritual, and I’ve found it hugely beneficial, especially at the beginning of my journey when life felt very tough. I would practise this several times a day to bring myself back to my body, particularly in moments of anxiety, panic, or fear. Combined with breath awareness exercises, this had such a calming effect, and the more I practised it, the less I needed it. Eventually, I began incorporating mindfulness practices outdoors in nature, whether in my garden or on walks in the local woods.

Visualisation as a Powerful Grounding Tool

As I researched more about anxiety, I came across an article that explained the benefits of grounding.

“Grounding, or earthing, involves connecting directly with the Earth, whether by walking barefoot on natural surfaces like grass or sand or simply spending time in nature. Studies suggest that grounding may reduce stress, ease anxiety, improve sleep, and lessen pain by helping to balance the body’s energy. This simple practice promotes a calm, centred feeling, bringing the mind and body back to a state of well-being. Visualisation grounding can also be an effective alternative when physical connection with nature isn’t possible, offering similar calming and grounding benefits.”

This really intrigued me, and I was open and desperate to try anything that might help. I soon realised my garden could be my sanctuary—a safe place where I could practise mindfulness, grounding, and journaling. It became my medicine, the space where I grew my roots to healing. My garden is where I learned to reconnect with my intuition, where I was then guided to deeper self-awareness.

Making Nature Your Sanctuary

It’s amazing how we truly become appreciative of our outdoor spaces, where we can reconnect with ourselves and realise the importance of these spaces that we once took for granted. For so long, I searched for something to help me feel better, only to find that natural healing resources were right outside my home.

Back when even stepping out my back door was a challenge, I began by sitting at my open bedroom window to practise mindfulness. I listened to outdoor sounds—the birds, the trees, aeroplanes, cars passing by, or neighbours working in their gardens. Watching the clouds in the sky also helped me feel present.

From Garden to Soul Sanctuary

I remember the very first time I went into my garden barefoot, standing on the grass, fully aware of the grounding effects I’d researched. I felt an inner knowing that this was healing me. At first, I wondered if anyone watching would think I was odd, but knowing how good this was for me and my health, I truly didn’t care. That was a breakthrough for me.

I soon went from standing barefoot to lying on the ground, fully connecting with the Earth and feeling nourished. I would even enter deep meditative states, hearing the gentle guidance of my soul. I’ve also practised energy healing on myself while grounding, which I found profoundly powerful.

Following my intuition, I added more practices like chakra cleansing, visualisation, and breathwork. I now share these practices with clients, providing them with tools to support their own healing journeys. These techniques have proven effective for managing anxiety and connecting with inner peace.

I plan to offer workshops in my garden’s soul sanctuary space. If you’re interested, keep an eye out on my socials or contact me to be added to my mailing list for my monthly newsletter.

Simple Grounding Exercise to Try

Here is a grounding visualisation practice you can try yourself:

1. Sit comfortably, placing your feet firmly on the ground.

2. Gently close your eyes and take a deep breath in through your nose. As you exhale slowly through your mouth, allow your shoulders to relax.

3. Visualise roots growing from the soles of your feet, reaching down into the Earth like the roots of a strong, ancient tree. Picture them growing deep and wide, travelling all the way to the Earth’s centre.

4. Imagine a giant crystal at the Earth’s core. Envision your roots wrapping around this crystal, drawing in its supportive energy. Feel this energy rise through your roots, bringing you a deep sense of calm, safety, and connection.

5. Remain here for a few moments, feeling grounded, supported, and loved by the Earth’s energy. When you feel ready, gently open your eyes.
