The Power of the Micro Pause

Tips on how to start adding micro-pauses into your day to help generate more balance and calm in your life.

It can be so easy to be too busy, rushing around doing everything, especially when running a business. We can get caught in a cycle, working harder, doing more, and not being aware that we are heading towards burnout.

But there is a way to give yourself a break, which doesn't have to cost anything or take up too much time, in fact under two minutes. Just take a breath and pause....

Micro pauses are simple ways for you to rebalance when you need to and can be part of your daily self-care routine. The aim of these pauses is not for them to be perfect but so you are aware, conscious, and observant of yourself.

Here are 4 micro pauses, all under two minutes, to help intersperse your day and rebalance your life:

If you want to gain perspective, look at the horizon.

When you feel busy and stressed your attention naturally goes inward and your creativity can close down. To counteract this, go to a window and allow your attention to move outwards to the horizon. Breathe steadily and slowly as you do this and let fresh perspectives flow into you. Relax and soften your eyes and let your gaze widen. Stay for a couple of minutes enjoying the vista.

If you want to feel calm, inhale lavender oil.

Lavender is one of the most versatile essential oils to have in your 'de-stress' kit. Put a couple of drops of oil in your palms, rub them together, then inhale deeply for instant calm. You can also sprinkle on your pillow to help you sleep at night.

If you want to find balance, take three deep breaths.

When you feel worried or anxious, your chest tightens and your breathing becomes shallow. This can result in lack of oxygen which leads to you feeling even more anxious. In moments like this, breathing deeply and slowly can help. It reconnects you to your body, reduces anxiety and allows you to come back to the present moment. Close your eyes or choose a focus point and take a deep breath , in through your nose right into your stomach and out again through your nose. Repeat this at least three times.

Find yourself a special tin, box or jar. It can be plain or decorated, whatever feels right for you.

Start adding little notes every time something happens that you are grateful for. Anything that happens or that anyone says, that is memorable and makes you smile or warms your heart. Whenever you feel you need a 'pick me up' you can open your jar or box and take a couple of notes out and reflect on those precious moments.

Any or all of these suggestions can easily be implemented into your daily life and will help to rebalance and keep you on an even keel.
