Recently, a comment on one of my posts stopped me in my tracks. A parent opened up about how overwhelming it is to juggle the demands of parenting and work while feeling unsupported. They wrote, “It feels like, no matter what I do, I’m failing at something — whether it’s my kids, my work, or myself.”

Their words resonated deeply because they capture a feeling that so many parentpreneurs experience but rarely talk about. That constant battle to meet the needs of our families, our businesses, and ourselves can leave us feeling like we’re always falling short.

This isn’t just one parent’s experience — it’s a common struggle, and it deserves more attention.

Why Do So Many Parents Feel This Way?

The short answer: because we’re trying to do too much, often without enough support.

Parenting is a full-time job. Entrepreneurship is a full-time job. When you’re doing both, it’s like working two jobs at once, with no clear off-switch. And in a world that celebrates hustle culture and perfection, the pressure to excel at everything becomes unbearable.

Here’s why this happens:

  1. Unrealistic Expectations: Society often paints an idealized picture of what it means to be a “successful” parent and entrepreneur. We’re expected to have thriving businesses, spotless homes, and perfectly happy kids—all while looking and feeling great.

  2. Lack of Support Systems: For many parentpreneurs, support systems like family, friends, or even childcare are limited or non-existent. Without these safety nets, we’re left carrying the weight of everything on our own.

  3. Role Overload: Switching between being a parent and a business owner multiple times a day is mentally exhausting. One moment, you’re answering a client’s urgent email; the next, you’re helping your child with homework. The constant role-switching can drain your energy and focus.

  4. Guilt: This one hits hard. When we’re working, we feel guilty for not spending enough time with our kids. When we’re with our kids, we feel guilty for not working. This guilt creates a vicious cycle of self-doubt and frustration.

The Lightbulb Moment: You’re Not Failing

Here’s the truth that changed everything for me: you’re not failing; you’re overwhelmed.

It’s not about being incapable; it’s about the unrealistic expectations and lack of support that make it feel impossible to succeed. The problem isn’t you — it’s the system that doesn’t provide the tools or community to make parentpreneurship manageable.

When I realized this, it was like a weight lifted off my shoulders. I stopped seeing myself as “not enough” and started focusing on how to create balance in a way that worked for me.

What We Need to Thrive

If you’ve ever felt this way, know that there’s a better path forward. Here’s what parents need to break free from the cycle of overwhelm:

  1. Support: Having a network of people who understand your journey is invaluable. Whether it’s friends, family, or a community of like-minded parentpreneurs, support can make the difference between surviving and thriving.

  2. Realistic Expectations: Redefine what success looks like for you. It’s not about being perfect in every area — it’s about being present and intentional in the ones that matter most.

  3. Boundaries: Set clear boundaries for work and family time. This doesn’t mean achieving perfect balance every day, but creating structure that allows you to prioritize without guilt.

  4. Self-Care: Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish; it’s essential. When you prioritize your mental and physical health, you show up better for your family and your business.
