The Alternative Piano Tutor

I'm already different, because I'm the Tropic Pianist Gamer, but why do I market myself as an "alternative" piano tutor?

Everyone needs a unique selling point. It helps with visibility, it helps your ideal clients find you.

A mentor once said to me that I was the most "nichest" person she'd ever worked with, yet I'm a business owner with many "niches"

I've actually been a piano tutor for nearly 8 years. Most of those 8 years I had an anxiety disorder, so I was very much invisible and unable to grow my business beyond a few chance discoveries of posters I'd left in small village shops. I was actually scared of most people up until nearly lockdown. How are you supposed to grow if you're 1) scared of everything and 2) just a piano tutor?

Coming out of lockdown, I'd done such deep self development (I'd never even heard of such a thing before I joined Tropic in March 2020) that I knew that it was ok to have more than one "niche", and it was in fact ok to be ... different...

I'd always struggled with being different, yet I never fitted in anywhere. Always an outcast. I felt judged as a musician, judged as a female (adult) gamer, and judged because I'd joined a network marketing company.

Fast forward to 2022, I'd found my tribe of cheerleaders thanks to networking, and I was ready to go out there as an "alternative" piano tutor. The Tropic Pianist Gamer.

Most of the tutors in my area are of the older generation. Very traditional, structured, even boring.

I teach from my **Galaxy** themed studio, I wear my funky leggings (Lucy Locket Loves/ Tikiboo), I have various references to Nintendo dotted around my studio (Banana plush, yoshi, a giant sleeping Pikachu are just a few!)
I want learning piano to be fun. I want to inspire the younger generation to enjoy their music. Unless they're following exams, I don't tell them what to play. I let them come to me, and I recommend if needed. I have stickers and lots of colouring for the youngest students, and the older students know they can ask me whatever they want and nothing is a stupid question.

So, I'm an alternative piano tutor, because you won't find another piano tutor like me in probably the entire universe cool

Proud to be different, but even moreso, proud to be authentically myself :)
