On the settee in her living room, Catherine sat drinking her third cup of coffee of the morning. Despite having barely any sleep the night before, at six a.m. she climbed out of bed.

Sipping from her cup, she stared at the boxes and black bags piled in the corner. Today was going to be tough. Thomas, the son she had raised as a single parent, was leaving home. While on one hand she was happy he had gotten into his first-choice university, she hated that he was going to be so far away where she couldn’t protect him from the dangers of the world.

Thomas told her loudly and often how capable he was of taking care of himself, but the bomb site he called a bedroom and his inability to cook anything that didn’t require boiling water said otherwise....
