We often push ourselves to the limit, trying to meet high standards of productivity, achievement, beauty and whatever else that is thrown our way. In doing so, we forget to take care of ourselves because we're too busy taking care of all that and then also the care of others too. But living in this constant stressful and busy state isn't truly living though is it? It's just surviving and it's not natural or healthy to always be in this state.
Most of us spend our days looking after everything and everyone else. By the end of the day, we're too tired to care for ourselves. We might watch TV, do household chores, or just fall into bed, only to repeat the cycle tomorrow and forgetting to really take some quality time for ourselves. Whether you're balancing work, school, motherhood, or personal life, self-care is super essential.
However, self-care isn't always on our minds. It's like a distant memory, something we know about but rarely act on. But how about instead of thinking about self care as an action, start by thinking of it as a philosophy. And that philosophy? Recognising that you are 100% worth your time and love.
Our minds can't run at full speed all the time, making sleep crucial for recharging. But self-care extends beyond sleep; it's as vital as eating and breathing and should be a priority
Think about your day today. Did you take a moment to relax? Did you find reasons to smile or laugh? When was the last time you took a day for yourself? If you can't remember, it's time to focus on your well-being. Slow down and take a moment for yourself.
Jumping into a full self-care routine overnight can be tough, so take your time and implement things little by little.
Here are a few tips to help you get started.
- Take Short Breaks: Even a five-minute break can help clear your mind. Step outside for fresh air or do a quick stretch. Self care doesnt need to be huge amounts of time. It can be whatever suits your lifestyle.
- Unplug: Set aside time each day to disconnect from screens. I actually use an app to set time limits on certain social media platforms and also set away time for meals too.
- Practice Mindfulness: Spend a few minutes each day practicing deep breathing or meditation to reduce stress. Or even try journalling. Jotting down the things you are grateful for and maybe setting intentions for the day.
- Do Something You Enjoy: Make time for activities that make you happy, whether it's listening to music, cooking, reading a book or even taking a walk. Whatever lights you up.
- Set Boundaries: Learn to say no and prioritise your own needs. It's okay to put yourself first sometimes. Let people around you know that you need a little time to recharge.
Ultimately though, self-care isn't just about what you do; it's about how it makes you feel. You'll be more productive after taking a break, whether it's an hour, a day, or just 15 minutes. Stepping away from the hustle can refresh your mind and spark new ideas. Just remember your self-care routine is personal and unique to you.
And if you are looking for something a little more to help you on your journey, I have a day retreat coming up on 20th July. I have designed it to be a gorgeous day for you to unwind and fill back up your cup and also take home practical skills to continue your self care journey at home too.
