Embrace, Accept, Thrive - The Art of Receiving Compliments and Boosting Self-Love

Embracing compliments is a fundamental step towards boosting self-love and self-acceptance, but something many struggle with. If this you, read on to explore ways to overcome it.

When we learn to accept compliments graciously, it positively impacts our self-esteem and confidence, enhancing our overall sense of wellbeing. In this day and age, we are often guilty of downplaying our achievements or dismissing compliments, which can lead to diminished self-esteem and a negative self-perception.

The first step towards learning to accept compliments can be as simple as saying "thank you" when someone compliments you. This small, yet impactful gesture serves as an acknowledgment and acceptance of your positive attributes.

It's crucial to refrain from undermining your accomplishments or brushing aside compliments. It can be so easy to reply back with something negative, I know, I've been there.

Instead, allow yourself to relish the pride that comes with your achievements. Trust in the sincerity of compliments and express gratitude in a personalised way, such as saying, "I really appreciate you noticing that," or "Your kind words mean a lot to me."

Practicing self-affirmations can also help build your self-esteem, making it easier to accept compliments with grace and gratitude. Spend some time writing down what you love about yourself and remind yourself daily.

Another technique to embrace compliments is by focusing more on the positive emotions they stir up, rather than the compliment itself. For instance, if someone admires your outfit, instead of dismissing it with a "Oh, it's just an old thing," try to concentrate on the sense of pride and confidence that the compliment inspires.

You can also practice receiving compliments in front of a mirror. This may feel awkward at first, but practicing accepting compliments in front of a mirror can help you become more comfortable with the process. Focus on maintaining eye contact, smiling, and expressing gratitude as you would in real-life situations.

Another good way is to share compliments with others.  Pay it forward by complimenting others sincerely and genuinely. Not only does this spread positivity, but it also creates a culture of appreciation and mutual support.

Your tribe affects your vibe so they say. So try surrounding yourself with friends, family, and colleagues who uplift and encourage you. Their positive reinforcement can reinforce your self-confidence and make it easier to accept compliments with grace and gratitude.

These are all tried and tested tricks that I have most definitely used my self over the years.

I remember an incident on a bus recently. A lady approached me to tell me I had a beautiful face. The 'old' me would've reacted with embarrassment, probably dismissing her compliment as a joke. But this time I simply smiled and thanked her. The rest of my day was spent on cloud nine with a smile firmly on my face.

As a challenge to you, why not try giving a few genuine compliments to others every day and see how it makes you feel?

I'm certain you'll find it rewarding, and just imagine the joy it brings them. It might just make accepting your next compliment a bit easier too!

I would love to know how you get on.
