Sexual norms and the importance of safe sex practices, including insights into anal stimulation and the risks associated with it. The need for safety features in sex toys and the importance of seeking medical care when necessary.

Each year, sexuality becomes more open and the boundaries continue to get pushed. In the last several years, the movie series, 50 Shades of Gray as well as the 365-day series have been mainstream X-rated content huge successes. the BDSM crowd has also benefited from this normalization, particularly through the Shades of Gray series.

Shifting Sexual Norms: From Mainstream Media to Real-Life Practices

The practice of anal sex was more common among homosexual men, but has not only flourished with that crowd, but more heterosexual men and women are getting involved. Curious folks have inserted, food, pipes, etc. into their rectum during anal stimulation. Sadly there’s been at least one reported casualty in the medical literature, referring to trauma related to anal sex and rectal perforation.

The image above shows a CT scan obtained of an approximately 40 cm sex toy made of silicon that was inserted during anal stimulation and was subsequently lost in the patient's body. This happens sometimes due to lubrication and slippery surfaces. This is obviously an emergency as one needs to get the toy removed. This case required a colon specialist to remove the toy; this can be done in the operating room or with a scope and snare device. Given the inability to visualize how far the toy has migrated, seeking medical care is prudent.

It will be an interesting conversation when you check into the emergency or urgent care. Remember that often a medical diagnosis made at an emergency visit is exceedingly hard to get off your permanent medical record, and will almost certainly go to your insurance company but it’s worth the embarrassment. Plus, what a story!

The Importance of Safety in Sexual Exploration: Understanding Risks and Precautions

As we continue to pull back the boundaries, individuals will demand more safety features on sex toys. I have a patent-designed toy, that quite simply provides a durable hygienic cord at the end of the toy, for which it would be easy to hold or keep outside of one’s body cavities. I offered to work with the sex toy manufacturers in this design project, however, their feeling was that they would have to redesign all their toys, which would be costly, and also their toys without a cord would look inferior. So much for customer safety. I guess they’re not the ones with the toy in the rectum.

So, have fun this weekend!!!
